A rescue team drilled a 2, 257 feet hole down to the bottom of the San Jose mine and was able to make contact with the miners. They send back a note that said, “All 33 of us are fine inside the shelter.”
Country officials, friends and relatives of the trapped miners were ecstatic with the news. Many of them had already lost hope of seeing at least one of the miners alive until the message. “Today all of Chile is crying with excitement and joy,” Pinera said.
The drilled hole will also serve as a pathway where rescuers can send down water, food, medicine and oxygen. Video and sound equipment will also be sent down so that the men down there can get in touch with their family and the rescue team much easier.
However, rescuing all 33 miners is going to take about four months. “A shaft 66 cm in diameter will take at least 120 days,” Engineer Andre Sougarret of the rescue operation said. He and his team have already started looking for rescue equipment from around the world that will help them create an escape tunnel about 700 meters underground.
